Move Unallocated space on Windows 10
This article introduces how to move Unallocated space in Windows 10 (32/64 bit) without losing data. Drag and drop to move Unallocated partition next to C drive or end of disk.
Unallocated is blank disk space and not belong to any drive, you can get Unallocated space by deleting or shrinking a volume in Windows 10 Disk Management. Besides creating new volumes, you can add Unallocated space to C drive or any data volumes to increase partition size. However, to accomplish this task, you need 3rd party partition software.
The most common issue in Windows 10 is C drive getting full, so many people try to shrink D and extend C drive with the built-in Shrink Volume and Extend Volume in Disk Management, but it is impossible. After shrinking D drive, Unallocated space is nonadjacent to C drive, so Extend Volume is greyed out. In this situation, you need to move Unallocated space to the other side, then Extend Volume will be enabled.
In fact, no matter you want to move Unallocated space next to C drive, move rightwards or to the end of disk, it is very easy. In this article, I’ll introduce the easiest way to transfer Unallocated space by dragging and dropping.
In my Windows 10 laptop, there are several volumes plus an 10GB Unallocated space in Disk 0. Le’ts see how to move location of this Unallocated space.
Move Unallocated space to the right
Download and install NIUBI Partition Editor, the same with Disk Management, there is 10GB Unallocated space between drive D and E.Right click drive E and select Resize/Move Volume, drag the middle position leftwards in the pop-up window.
Unallocated space is moved to the right side of drive E.
Move Unallocated space to the end of drive
If you want to move the Unallocated space to the end of this disk, it is similar. Right click drive F and select Resize/Move Volume, drag the middle position leftwards in the pop-up window, and then the Unallocated space will be moved to the end.
Move Unallocated space next to C drive
As I said above, most of people want to shrink D to extend C drive, but it is impossible in Windows 10 Disk Management, because Extend Volume works only when there is adjacent Unallocated space on the right side. Unallocated space is nonadjacent to C drive after shrinking D.
Steps to move Unallocated space into C drive in Windows 10:
Step 1: Right click drive D and select Resize/Move Volume, drag middle position rightwards.
Unallocated space is moved to next C drive.
Step 2: Right click drive C and select Resize/Move Volume again, in the pop-up window, drag the right border rightwards.
Unallocated space is moved into C drive.
This program works in virtual mode and the operations you do will be listed as pending on bottom left, you can click Undo on top left to cancel or click Apply to confirm and execute.
In Summary
To move Unallocated space in Windows 10, run NIUBI Partition Editor to drag middle position towards other side in the pop-up window. If you want to combine Unallocated space in Windows 10, simply drag the border towards the other side. Note that you should right click the partition and select “Resize/Move Volume” feature, not right click the Unallocated space.
