Guide to resize partition in Windows 7
To use disk space more efficiently you’d better create more than one volume especially when you have a large hard drive. Separate partition for system, programs and personal files. It is a good way to organize files and improve computer performance. However, there is still an issue of disk space usage especially for system C drive, which is very likely getting full. It cannot be better if you can resize Windows 7 partition drives, otherwise, you have to start from scratch to reinstall Windows and programs.
In Windows 7, partition resizing become much easier than previous Windows XP, because Microsoft added new Shrink Volume and Extend Volume functionalities in Windows 7 Disk Management console. However, not all disk partitions can be resized due to some inherent limitations. In this article I’ll show you how to resize partition in Windows 7 (32 bit and 64 bit) with built-in Disk Management and professional disk partition software.
Resize partition with Windows 7 Disk Management
If your disk partition configuration fits for the requirements, you can change partition size in Windows 7 Disk Management without third party partitioning software. Windows 7 DM is easy to resize partition, working fast, but as I said above, some partitions cannot be shrank or extended.
How to decrease size of a partition
- Press and on keyboard, type diskmgmt.msc and press Enter to open Disk Management.
- Right click C drive and click Shrink Volume.
- Enter the amount of space and click Shrink to execute.
Limitations of Shrink Volume functionality:
- Only NTFS partition is support, FAT32 and other types of partitions cannot be shrank.
- Unallocated space can only be generated on the right side, so you cannot extend other drive with this free space.
- You cannot shrink volume beyond the point where any unmovable files are located, that means you can only shrink little space.
How to increase partition size
Note: only when there is adjacent Unallocated space on the right side, you can expand a drive with Extend Volume, otherwise, Extend Volume is grayed out, steps:
- Open Disk Management
- Right click the drive that has adjacent Unallocated space and select Extend Volume.
- Extend Volume Wizard will be opened, simply click Next to finish..
Limitations of Extend Volume:
- Only NTFS partition is support.
- Extend Volume only works when there is adjacent Unallocated space on the right side.
- Free space of Logical partition cannot be extended to Primary partition even if this space is right adjacent, and vice versa.
To resize Windows 7 volume drives, 3rd-party partition software is better choice.
Resize Windows 7 partition with software
Comparing with Disk Management, professional partition software has no such limitations, and you can resize disk partition by simply dragging and dropping. However, there is potential risk of losing data. What?
Different with other types of program that just read from and save files to disk partition, to resize disk partition on Windows 7 or other versions, partitioning software will modify all parameters of related disk, partition and files. In some situations, all files in the partition should be moved to new locations. What happens if some software internal error or hardware issue (such as power outage) occur during this operation? Part of the parameters won’t be modified successfully, that means, you cannot boot Windows or lose all files of related partitions. So you’d better make a backup and select reliable partition software to resize hard disk drives.
1. Virtual mode
Unlike Disk Management that take effect the modification instantly, NIUBI Partition Editor is working in its virtual mode. The operations you do will be listed as pending on bottom left for preview, you can undo the incorrect or unwanted operations. Real disk partition won’t be changed until you click Apply to confirm.
2. 1 Second Rollback protection
This is unique technology of NIUBI. If any software or hardware issue occur while partition resizing, this program can revert the computer to original status automatically and rapidly. If it happens, nothing will be changed or lost. This innovative technology helps many people prevent from losing the precious family photos, work documents, etc.
3. Cancel-at-will technology
What will you do if you have to leave but partition resizing is not finished, or the computer is stuck due to low CPU/RAM or other reasons? Terminate the program or forcely reboot the computer? If you do that, damage occur with no doubt. With the help of unique Cancel-at-will technology of NIUBI, you can cancel the ongoing operations without worrying about losing data. Furthermore, the cancellation can be done immediately without waiting a long time to revert.
Then is it difficult to resize disk partitions? Actually, you just need 2 steps by simply dragging and dropping on the disk map.
