Move hard drive partition on Windows 10
This article introduces how to move partition in Windows 10 with safest partition manager software. Move disk volume with 1 step by dragging and dropping on the disk map. Move Windows 10 partition to left, right or another disk without reinstalling Windows or losing any data.
Typical example why moving partition
Windows 10 inherited the Shrink Volume and Extend Volume in Disk Management snap-in from previous version, with which you can decrease and increase size of existing volumes without reinstalling Operating System. However, Disk Management cannot extend C drive by shrinking D, why?
- Shrink Volume can only shrink a partition towards left and produce Unallocated space on its right side.
- Extend Volume can only expand the partition with adjacent Unallocated space, furthermore, Unallocated must be on the right side.
After shrinking drive D, Unallocated space is on the right side of D, so Extend Volume greyed out for both drive C and E:
In this situation, if there is a tool can move Unallocated partition to the other side, Extend Volume will be enabled for C and E drive.
Which tool to move Windows 10 partition?
There are many programs to move partition for Windows 10, including free and commercial, Windows setup and Linux kernel based. But few people know that there is potential data loss risk when resizing disk partition.
Some unreliable partitioning software could cause part of the parameters of disk, partition or files failed to be updated, if it happens, you cannot boot Windows and/or lose files. So remember to back up and select the safe disk partition tool.
Better than other tools, NIUBI Partition Editor Professional is integrated unique 1 Second Rollback technology to ensure system and data intact while resizing and moving partition in Windows 10. If any software error or hardware issue happens, it automatically reverts the computer to original status in a flash. In that case, nothing will be changed or lost.
As professional partition manager software, NIUBI can create, delete, format partition, change drive letter. Resize, move, merge existing partitions without data loss, copy, hide, set active, convert, defrag, check partition and much more. It is compatible with Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP (both 32 and 64 bit).
How to move volume with NIUBI Partition Editor?
It is very easy to move partition and Unallocated space, just drag and drop on the disk map and only 1 step is required.
If you use hardware RAID arrays, such as RAID 0, 1, 5, do not break raid array, follow the same step below.
Steps to move partition on Windows 10 with NIUBI:Download and install NIUBI Partition Editor, you’ll see all connected disk with partition layout. In my Windows 10 laptop, there is several drives with one 10GB Unallocated space. You can move any adjacent drive with the Unallocated space.
Move partition D to the right side:
Right click D and select “Resize/Move Volume“, drag middle position rightwards in the pop-up window.
Volume D will be moved to the right and Unallocated space will be moved to the left side at the same time.
Click Apply on top left to execute. (all operations before clicking Apply working in virtual mode and you can undo/redo any step.)
Right click C drive and select “Resize/Move Volume” again. In the pop-up window drag right border rightwards to combine the Unallocated space.
C drive is extended to 40GB by adding this Unallocated space.
Move drive E to left side:
Let’s back to original status: the 10GB Unallocated space is on the right side of drive D.
To move partition E, it is similar, right click drive E and select Resize/Move Volume, drag the middle position leftwards in the pop-up window.
Drive E will be moved to the left and Unallocated will be moved to the right side. Now you can add the Unallocated space to drive F if you want.
With NIUBI Partition Editor, you can move partition in Windows 10 with adjacent Unallocated space easily. However, no partition tool can move drive E to between drive C and D directly. If the partitions are in disorder, you can change their drive letter one by one.
If you want to move a volume over another one, or move a partition to another disk, you can use Copy Volume feature to achieve.
