Windows 10 has built-in Disk Management, with which you can create, delete, format, set Active partition and change drive letter. In addition, you can re-size partition with the advanced Shrink and Extend Volume functionalities. However, to repartition hard disk drive in Windows 10, the built-in features can only help you in some conditions, the typical example includes:

  • Shrink Volume only works for NTFS partition, and it can only generate Unallocated space on the right side.
  • Extend Volume only works when there is adjacent Unallocated space on the right side, and it only supports NTFS partition, too.

If you want to increase C drive space by shrinking D, Windows 10 Disk Management cannot help you. More about Shrink and Extend Volume:

Comparing with Windows 10 Disk Management, partition software can do much more operations such as merge partitions, move, copy, convert, defrag, wipe, repair and scan partition. When resizing disk partitions, you just need to drag and drop on the software. In addition, all NTFS and FAT32 drives in the same disk can be re-partitioned easily, no matter they are contiguous or not. Unallocated space and free space inside of any drive can be moved and combined to other drives.

Take care of system and data

Yes, partition software is easier and much more powerful than Windows 10 native Disk Management, but not all 3rd-party software can repartition disk drive well. Many people focus on the amount of functionalities or interface of a partition management software, few people pay attention to data safety. Actually, there is data loss and system damage risk while repartitioning hard disk drive, so it is important to select a safe and reliable partition software. Nobody likes to see family photos, work documents or other precious files lost.
