Extend disk partition on Windows Server 2019
The same with other Windows versions, disk drives in Server 2019 also runs out of space. In this situation, you can extend the volume that is running low. To extend partition in Windows Server 2019, there are two choices: Windows built-in Disk Management snap-in and 3rd-party partitioning software.
Server 2019 Disk Management has Extend Volume feature to expand partitioned drive, but it only works when there is adjacent Unallocated space on the right side, otherwise, Extend Volume is greyed out. Comparing with Disk Management, NIUBI Partition Editor can extend a drive with Unallocated space no matter it is contiguous or not. In addition, free space inside of other drives in the same disk can be use to extend partition, too.
In this article, I’ll show you both methods to extend volume on Windows Server 2019 without losing data.
Extend partition with Disk Management
It is not difficult to extend disk partition in Windows Server 2019 Disk Management, but there are many steps.
- Right click Windows flag on bottom left and select Disk Management.
- Right click the drive (here is D) and select Extend Volume.
- Click Next in the Extend Volume Wizard window.
- Available disk space is selected automatically, click Next to continue.
- Click Finish to begin extending.
Drive D is extended in a short time.
Limitations of Windows built-in Extend Volume
As I said above, Disk Management has limitations that cause you cannot extend volume in Windows Server 2019. Typical limitations include:
1. There must be adjacent Unallocated space
The built-in Extend Volume functionality only works when there is adjacent Unallocated space on the right side, otherwise, Extend Volume is disabled. From the screenshot below:
- Extend Volume is disabled for C drive, because the Unallocated space is nonadjacent.
- Extend Volume greyed out when right click drive E, because the Unallocated space is on the left side.
2. Only support NTFS partition
Extend Volume only supports NTFS partition, so FAT32 and other types of partitions can’t be extended, even though there is adjacent Unallocated space on the right side.
From the screenshot below, Extend Volumes is grayed out, because drive D is FAT32.
Extend volume with partition software
To extend partition in Windows Server 2019, NIUBI Partition Editor is better choice. Comparing with Disk Management, NIUBI Partition Editor has advantages including:
- NIUBI can extend a drive with Unallocated space no matter it is contiguous or not.
- NIUBI can extend a drive with Unallocated space on either side.
- Free space inside of other drives in the same disk can be use to extend partition, too.
Then how to extend partition with NIUBI Partition Editor? To better explain, I divide into several sections.
1. Extend partition with adjacent Unallocated space
Download NIUBI Partition Editor and you’ll see all disk partitions on the right side. In my test server, there is 20GB Unallocated space between drive D and E, so both drives can be extended with this space. How to extend drive E:
Right click E and select Resize/Move Volume.
In the pop-up window, drag left border leftwards.
Unallocated space is combined to drive E.How to extend drive D:
Right click D and select Resize/Move Volume, in the pop-up window, drag right border rightwards.
Unallocated space is added into D drive.
2. Extend partition with nonadjacent Unallocated space
This 20GB Unallocated space can be used to extend C: drive, even though they are nonadjacent.Steps:
Right click drive D and select Resize/Move Volume, in the pop-up window, drag middle position rightwards.
Unallocated space is moved to behind C drive.
Right click C drive and select Resize/Move Volume again. In the pop-up window, drag the right border rightwards.
Drive C is extended by holding this Unallocated space.
Extend partition with free space in other drive
What to do if there is no Unallocated space? It doesn’t matter, NIUBI Partition Editor can extend partition with free space inside of other drives in the same disk.
Watch the video how to shrink and extend partition in Windows Server 2019:
To extend disk partition in Windows Server 2019, Disk Management built-in Extend Volume feature can help you only when there is adjacent Unallocated space on the right side. In addition, this partition should be NTFS. But with NIUBI Partition Editor, it is much easier and without so much restrictions. You can extend partition with Unallocated and free space, no matter these space are on left or right side, adjacent or not.
Besides shrinking and extending to change partition size, NIUBI Partition Editor helps you do many other disk partition management operations. Because of its innovative 1 Second Rollback technology and special file-moving algorithm, NIUBI is the safest and fastest partition software for Windows Server and PC.
