C drive full

Solution C drive is getting full on Windows Server 2016

The same with previous versions, Windows Server 2016 system C: drive also runs out of disk space. Many people feedback that C drive is getting almost full. To data partitions, it is very easy to transfer files or change some settings, but it is complicated to the system partition.

To many server administrators, C drive full is annoying, because Microsoft doesn’t provide any solution except Disk Cleanup to free up disk space. The worse, C drive becomes full again shortly. This article shows the complete solution to fix C drive full on Windows Server 2016.

C drive full

Step 1 – free up disk space

It is dangerous if C drive is getting almost full, in this situation, you cannot install important Windows Updates. Server could stuck, reboot unexpectedly, the worst, you cannot boot Windows or system crash. Thus, you’d better start as fast as possible.

The fastest way to get free space for C drive is freeing up disk space, so the server could keep running smoothly. To do this, Windows native Disk Cleanup is a good choice, which is easy to use, runs fast and is able to remove many types of junk and unnecessary files. For detailed steps, refer how to free up disk space on Server 2016.

Select files

My test server is new installed, so I cannot reclaim large amount of disk space. To the servers that never or have not free up space for a long time, you may get several gigabits free space by Disk Cleanup.

However, this is not the final step to fix C drive full on Server 2016, because these free space will be eaten up quickly. The aim to free up disk space is getting some free space to C drive, so the server could back to the right way and you can install some programs to help solve this problem. The most important step is extending C drive to larger size.

Step 2 – expand C drive larger

The most efficient way to fix C drive full issue on Windows Server 2016 is shrinking other partitions and add free space to C drive.

To do this, Windows native Disk Management cannot help you, although there are Shrink and Extend Volume feature to resize disk partition. The only way to expand C drive with built-in Disk Management is by deleting the adjacent drive (D:) and then run Extend Volume feature. The problem is: programs and some services are running from D, so you cannot delete it. Refer why cannot extend C drive on Server 2016 in Disk Management.

Extend Volume greyed out

You need partition software for Windows Server. To be more accurate, you need safe partition software. There is potential system damage and data loss risk if you use some unreliable software. Don’t try to solve a problem but put the server in another danger.

Download NIUBI Partition Editor and follow the steps in the video to increase C drive space for Server 2016:

As you see, you can shrink any other data drives in the same disk to get unused space and add into C drive, all that you need to do is drag and drop on the disk map.

To expand C drive in Server 2016, NIUBI Partition Editor is the best choice, because it has unique technologies to protect system/data and ease the task, for example:

  • 1 Second Rollback – if any software or hardware issue occur, it automatically reverts the server to original status like nothing happened.
  • Virtual mode – the modifications you do won’t take effect immediately, the operations will be listed as pending for preview and real disk partition won’t be changed until you click Apply to confirm.
  • Advanced File-moving algorithm – resize hard drives 30% to 300% faster.
  • Cancel-at-will – cancel the unwanted but ongoing operations without losing data.
  • Hot-Resize – shrink and extend partition without rebooting server.

After expanding C drive, there will be plenty of free space again, this step is indispensable to the servers that C drive are created small.

– optimize server

To completely solve C drive full on Windows Server 2016, you need the final step, more precisely, assembled server optimization.

  1. Install programs to separated partition such as D.
  2. To the installed programs, change the default files output path to other partitions.
  3. Run Windows Disk Cleanup monthly to delete new generated junk files.

Tip If the system disk is small and there is not enough free space in all partitions, you’d better replace it with larger one. NIUBI Partition Editor can help you migrate Operating System and clone entire hard disk.
