There are many reasons why you need to move partition in Windows 2022 server. Fo example: when you cannot extend C drive after shrinking D, you can move D drive to the right and make Unallocated space adjacent to C drive, then this problem can be solved. When system disk is full, besides cloning or restoring to a larger disk, you can move one or more partition to another disk. Then you can solve this problem faster and much more easily without additional cost. This article introduces how to move partition in Windows Server 2022 on a disk and move partition to another disk.

Move Server 2022 partition on a disk

Windows native Disk Management and diskpart cannot move partition in Server 2022. Therefore, you need to run third party software to accomplish this task. When moving partition, the start and end postion will be changed, all files in this partition will be moved to new locations, too. That means, there's potential data loss rishk, you'd better run safe disk partition software. Better than other tools, NIUBI Partition has Virtual Mode, Cancel-at-will, 1-Second Rollback and Hot Clone technology to protect system and data.

Before starting, you should know that no software can move a partition over another one, but they can move partition to the left or right with adjacent Unallocated space. Follow the steps below then you'll know how NIUBI Partition Editor works.

How to move partition D in Windows Server 2022 to the right:

  1. Download this tool, right click D: drive and select "Resize/Move Volume", drag middle of D drive towards right in the pop-up window. Then D drive will be moved to the right and Unallocated space will be moved to the left at the same time.
  2. Right click C: drive and run "Resize/Move Volume", drag right border towards right to combine this Unallocated space.
  3. Click "Apply" on top left to take effect, done.

If there's a Recovery/OEM or other partition in the middle of C and D drive, continue to move this partition to the right. When Unallocated space is moved adjacent to C drive, you can extend C drive with this space easily.

If you want to extend E drive (on the right) after shrinking D, you can achieve without moving partition or Unallocated space. To do this, right click E drive and run "Resize/Move Volume". Drag left border towards left to merge this Unallocated space in the pop-up window.

Move Server 2022 volume to another disk

As I said above, when a disk is getting full, beside cloning or restoring to a larger disk, you may move one or more partitions to another disk. After moving these partitions, you can delete them and add the disk space to C drive. Programs won't work if you copy and paste files. In addition, the paste operation may be terminated due to many reasons.

When moving partition to another disk, there must be Unallocated space on the destination disk. If there's no such space, you can make it by shrinking a partition. To do this, right click a partition on destination disk and select "Resize/Move Volume". Drag either border towards the other one in the pop-up window.

How to move partition in Server 2022 to another disk:

  1. Right click a partition such as D: and select "Copy Volume", select the Unallocated space in pop-up window.
  2. Edit the size, location and type of the target partition and click Finish.
  3. Right click partition D and select Change Drive Letter, change it to any other one.
  4. Change the drive letter of copied partition to D.
