Move free space in Windows Server 2012

This article introduces how to move space in Windows Server 2012 R2 without losing data. Move free space from D to C, or transfer disk space from C to D.

Disk partitions are created while installing Windows or getting from OEM manufactures. After running the server for a period of time, some partitions may run out of space. For example: partition C with OS, drive D with programs or other volume with Windows services.

How to move free space from D to C

Download NIUBI Partition Editor and you'll see all disk partitions with structure and other information on the right, available operations to selected disk or partition are listed on the left and by right clicking.

There is C, D, E and system reserved partition in Disk 0. Original C: drive is 40GB and D: is 70GB. To resize partitions, you just need to drag and drop on the disk map.

Steps to move free space from D to C in Windows Server 2012:

Step 1: Right click drive D: and select "Resize/Move Volume", drag left border towards right in the pop-up window to release free space. (or enter an amount in the box Unallocated space before)

Shrink D

Then some Unallocated space is made on the left side of D.

Step 2: Right click drive C: and select "Resize/Move Volume" again, drag right border towards right to combine Unallocated space.

Extend C drive

Then 20GB free unused space is transferred from D to C.

Step 3: Click Apply on top left to take effect to real disk partition. (All operations before this step only work in virtual mode)

It is similar, the difference is moving towards opposite direction.

Move and extend partition with other disk

Note that the free space can only be transferred inside a hard disk, if you want move space to another separated disk, it is impossible with any partitioning software.

If you want to extend a partition but there is not plenty of available free space in the same disk, copy a larger one and then extend this partition with extra disk space. Follow the steps in the video:
