How to increase partition size in Windows 10

All disk partitions are allocated while installing Windows Operating System, but some drives may become full especially for system C: drive and the drives for backup, videos and projects. To data volumes, it is easy to solve this problem by transferring files or change the output location. But to system C drive, you cannot do this. Luckily, you can increase partition size in Windows 10 with professional partition software.

Increase partition size Windows 10

Integrated with innovative 1 Second Rollback technology, NIUBI Partition Editor can ensure system and data intact. Any Unallocated space or free space inside of a volume can be used to increase partition size of other volume without losing data. In this article, I’ll show you how to increase size of C drive or data volume in Windows 10 (32 and 64 bit).

In fact, Windows 10 native Disk Management has Shrink and Extend Volume functionalities to decrease and increase partition size, but it cannot extend a drive by shrinking other one. It is useless in most cases, so I don’t want to introduce this tool here. NIUBI Partition Editor Professional is much easier and more powerful. You just need to drag and drop on this software to change partition size.

Increase partition size with Unallocated space

Download NIUBI Partition Editor and you’ll see all disk drives on the right side. In my Windows 10 laptop, there is 20GB Unallocated space between drive D and E. Let’s see how to use it to increase size of other partitions.

NIUBI Partition Editor

Increase size of drive E:

Right click E and select Resize/Move Volume, drag left border leftwards in the pop-up window.

Increase drive E

20GB Unallocated space is combined to E drive.

Increase size of drive D:

Right click D and select Resize/Move Volume, drag right border rightwards in the pop-up window.

Increase drive D

Unallocated space will be merged to drive D.

Increase size of drive C:

Different with drive D and E, C is not adjacent to the Unallocated space. In this situation, you just need 1 more step to move Unallocated space next to C drive.

Step 1: right click drive D and select Resize/Move Volume, drag middle position rightwards in the pop-up window.

Move drive D

Unallocated space is moved to behind C drive.

Step 2: right click C drive and select Resize/Move Volume again, drag right border rightwards in the pop-up window.

Tips:

  1. The operations you do won’t be done immediately, to change physical disk drives, you need to click Apply on top left to confirm and execute.
  2. The pending operations with  can be done in Windows without rebooting.

Increase partition size with free space

If there is no existing Unallocated space, it doesn’t matter, you can get free space from other volumes to increase partition size in Windows 10. In most of the computers, there is adjacent drive D behind C, let’s see how to decrease D and increase C drive.

Increase C drive Win10

Step 2: right click C drive and select Resize/Move Volume to combine the Unallocated space. (Remember to click Apply on top left)

In Summary

Windows built-in Disk Management has Shrink and Extend Volume ability, but it cannot help you decrease and increase partition size in Windows 10. To do this, professional partition software is much easier and without restriction. Because of its system/data protection and fast recovering ability, NIUBI Partition Editor is the best choice to resize partition in Windows 10 and 8/7/Vista/XP.

  • If there is adjacent Unallocated space, simply drag either border towards the other side in pop-up window and then this drive will be increased.
  • If the Unallocated space is nonadjacent, you just need to move it to left or right side, and then this drive can be increased.
  • If there is no Unallocated space, you can take free space out from other volume, and then add to the drive that you want to extend.
