Low Disk Space is the most common hard disk issue in Windows 7. Though Windows 10 has been released for a long time, many people still use Windows 7. Windows 7 Low Disk Space

Introduction of Low Disk Space alert

When system C drive is running out of space and becomes full, you’ll find that C drive changed to be red in Windows Explorer, for example:

C drive full Windows 7

It is dangerous in this situation, because there is no free space to install Windows Updates or applications. Meanwhile, you’ll suffer from computer performance down, in addition, system runs much slower, stuck or reboot. Some people do not pay enough attention and it would be late if the system crash or fail to boot because of no free disk space in C drive. This is the reason why Microsoft creates such Low Disk Space warning. When C drive is running low on critical disk space, you’ll receive the Low Disk Space alert with warning message “You are running very low on disk space on OS (C:). To free space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary files, click here…“.

Windows 7 checks for available disk space every 10 minutes by default, and the pop up remains for 10 seconds. This is by design, keeping in mind certain performance issues. These are the threshold levels when you may see the pop-ups:

  • Free space less than 200 MB : You are running out of disk space on drive.
  • Free space less than 80 MB : You are running very low on disk space on disk
  • Free space less than 50 MB : You are running very low on disk space on disk
  • No free space remaining : You have run out of disk space on drive.

Method 1 – Reuse disk space

To reuse disk space, there are several ways such as deleting files manually, delete files with 3rd-party program or free up disk space with Windows 7 built-in Disk Cleanup. Windows Disk Cleanup is the first and best choice, because it is able to list and delete many types of files fast and safely.

To run Disk Cleanup, you may simply click the Low Disk Space warning when it pops up, or run from Windows Explorer.

Steps to free up disk space with Windows 7 Disk Cleanup:

Method 2 – Increase C drive size

All disk drives are created while installing Operating System or by OEM manufactures, but you can change partition size with partitioning software. In Windows 7, you can expand C drive with free partition software. Among these tools, NIUBI Partition Editor is the best choice, because it is the safest and fastest in the market. Download it
