Move drive D

Move partition in Windows Server 2019

Sometimes you need to move partition when manage disk drives, the typical example is that Extend Volume greyed out for C drive after shrinking D under Server 2019 Disk Management, leaving the Unallocated space in a puzzle. This problem can be solved easily if you can move drive D to the right side. Another example is that the disk drives are in disorder and some people want to move them to right position instead of changing drive letters.

In this article, I’ll show you how to move partition in Windows Server 2019 with ease.

Move drive D

Move partition with Unallocated space

Note: no partition tool can swap position of the partitions, to move partition there must be adjacent Unallocated space.

Download NIUBI Partition Editor, in my test server, there are 3 small system reserved partitions, drive C, D, E plus a 20GB Unallocated space behind drive D.

With this adjacent Unallocated space, I can move drive D or E easily.

Move drive towards the right

Right click drive D and select Resize/Move Volume, drag the middle position towards the right in the pop-up window.

Move drive D

Drive D is moved to the right side of Unallocated space.

Move volume towards the left

Back to original status and Unallocated space is between drive D and E. Right click drive E and select Resize/Move Volume, drag the middle position leftwards in the pop-up window.

Then drive E is moved to the left side of Unallocated space.

In Summary

Windows Server 2019 Disk Management has built-in Shrink and Extend Volume functionalities to change partition size, but because it cannot move partition, you cannot extend C drive by shrinking D. To move volume in Windows Server 2019, run Resize/Move Volume feature of NIUBI Partition Editor and drag the middle position in the pop-up window. You can move drive with adjacent Unallocated space on either side.

If there are large amount of files in the drives that you want to move, it costs much longer time. Thanks to the special file-moving algorithm, NIUBI Partition Editor is 30% to 300% faster than any other tools.
