How to increase disk space on Windows 10

Updated on: May 17, 2019

This article introduces how to increase disk space in Windows 10 (32 &64 bit). Increase space according to your disk partition structure.

The disk space of all hard drives are allocated while installing Windows, but the free space may exhaust, especially for system C drive. In this situation, it can't be better if you can increase disk space of C drive with free space in other partitions, so you can solve this problem without reinstalling Operating System and tons of programs.

In this article, I'll show you how to increase disk space of a partition in Windows 10 from other partitions. If you want to increase size of disk,

it is impossible, but there is alternative method.

Increase disk space without software

Windows 10 native Disk Management provides Shrink Volume and Extend Volume functionalities to change size of allocated partition on the fly. However, you can't extend a partition by shrinking other one, because it has some serious restrictions:

So the only way to increase disk space of partition in Windows 10 Disk Management is by deleting the adjacent partition. For example how to increase partition size of D:

  1. Transfer all files in drive E to other partition.
  2. Press Windows and X on keyboard and then click Disk Management.
  3. Right click drive E: and select Delete Volume.
  4. Right click drive D: and select Extend Volume.
  5. Click Next to complete the Extend Volume Wizard.

In most of computers, programs are installed in drive D, so do NOT delete it to expand C drive.

Increase disk space of C drive

With NIUBI Partition Editor, you can increase partition space with unused space in other one without deleting. Comparing with Windows 10 Disk Management, it has advantages such as:

Download NIUBI Partition Editor and you'll see initial disk partition size and structure on the right.

Main window

How to increase disk space of C from D:

Step 1: Right click drive D and select "Resize/Move Volume", drag left border rightwards in the pop-up window.

Shrink D

Then part of unused disk space in Drive D is converted to Unallocated on the left side.

Shrink D rightwards

Step 2: Right click drive C and select "Resize/Move Volume" again, drag right border rightwards in the pop-up window.

Extend C drive

Then Unallocated disk space is combined to C drive.

Extend volume C

Increase disk space from other disk

If you want to increase a 256GB disk to 512GB, it is impossible, because a hard disk is physical unit and disk space can only be transferred inside it. Instead, you can copy to larger disk and replace it. While cloning disk, all partitions inside of it can be extended with extra disk space.

In Summary

To increase disk space on Windows 10, native Disk Management can only achieve by deleting the adjacent partition. With NIUBI Partition Editor, you can increase partition size by shrinking another one no matter they are adjacent or not. You can also extend partition by copying to larger disk.
